Functionality of solar watches.
Behind the translucent dials, so-called solar cells are installed. These solar cells capture the light and convert it into electric current. This is passed on to the movement and drives it. Rarely is the entire energy consumed in the process. The surplus power is transferred to a rechargeable battery (power storage), which supplies the watch with electricity even when it is dark. The running time without additional light is called the dark power reserve. This varies from one watch brand and movement caliber to another. To achieve darkness reserves of up to one year and more, some watches switch off their time display. The watch continues to run in the background, even though the hands are stationary. The clock is reactivated by the incidence of light and the hands automatically adjust to the current time. Only solar radio-controlled clocks also take into account the time difference and, if necessary, the date.
