Features of the solar watches
So-called solar cells are installed behind the translucent dials. These solar cells capture the light and convert it into electricity. This is passed on to the movement and drives it. Rarely is the entire energy consumed in the process. The surplus power is transferred to a rechargeable battery (power storage), which supplies the clock with electricity even when it is dark. The running time without additional light is called the dark power reserve. This varies from watch brand to watch brand and from movement to movement calibre. In order to achieve darkness reserves of up to one year and more, some watches switch off their time display. The watch continues to run in the background, even though the hands have stopped. The clock is reactivated by the incidence of light and the hands automatically set themselves to the current time. Only in the case of solar radio-controlled clocks is the time difference and, if necessary, the date also taken into account.
